IAP2A Certificate in Engagement

The IAP2 Australasia Certificate in Engagement was developed in 2014 to meet the needs of the Australasian engagement practitioner, using local terminology, case studies and concepts.

This program is designed for the emerging practitioner, and incorporates flexibility with a range of electives and delivery options ranging between one to two day courses.

Courses take a holistic approach looking at the many perspectives and facets of engagement in the modern context.

Face-to-face training options are available, in addition to digital learning in IAP2 Learn, our facilitated virtual classroom.

Content

Covers the IAP2 concepts of Core Values of Public Participation, Code of Ethics and the IAP2 Spectrum, and explores key concepts and processes in IAP2 Australasia’s Engagement Model.

Engagement methods described:

  • 60 methods included in the Methods Matrix
  • Quick Reference Guide containing implementation details for 7 methods
  • 9 Social media platforms
  • Plus a section on how to evaluate engagement methods.

Learning objectives

  • Describe contemporary community engagement in an Australasian context with broad definitions of community engagement to reflect the modern engagement environment.
  • Identify purpose and context for engagement
  • Design engagement programs and approaches for a range of purposes and situations
  • Use a wide range of tools to create effective communication and constructive dialogue
  • Understand both organisation-led and community-led engagement

Delivery

Divided into three modules (two and one-unit modules).  One of the two-unit modules can be substituted with two one-unit electives, enabling greater flexibility for the student to fit course attendance in with their work schedule.

The certificate can be completed via different pathways to reach a total of 5 units, to suit each student.

During these challenging times, the scheduling of face-to-face courses is minimised or may not be available in certain areas of Australia and New Zealand, in line with government advice. You will find that many of our courses are available online in IAP2 Learn – our virtual facilitated classroom. However, if you would prefer to attend a course face-to-face, and don’t see one scheduled, please email info@iap2.org.au to express your interest in having your choice of course available in a face-to-face format.

Who should attend

Suitable for the emerging engagement practitioner or anyone involved in public participation and community engagement projects in government, corporations, utilities, environmental agencies, community organisations and universities who would like to understand public participation/community engagement in an Australasian context.

A choice of learning electives are offered, allowing students to delve more deeply into the areas of engagement most applicable to their work – such as engagement design or engagement methods.

Upon completion

Participants receive a certificate of completion from IAP2 Australasia.

Engagement Essentials

In this prerequisite for IAP2 Australasia’s Certificate in Engagement, you will learn the key models of engagement and practice, and how:

  • the community Engagement Model helps you to decide whether the organisation is responsible, or whether the community should take the lead, or whether both should work together, giving you clarity to your planning.
  • the five-step Design Platform ensures you make the right decisions, and are working in the right ‘profile’, and,
  • the IAP2 Spectrum helps you decide how much influence on the decision is allowed.

By the end of this course you will understand the essential elements of a ‘best practice’ contemporary model for engagement and the next steps you, or your organisation need to take.

Engagement Design

The aim of Engagement Design is to apply the key design concepts and process of IAP2 Australasia’s Engagement Model.

Our two-day Engagement Design course delves into the detailed requirements of planning a successful engagement process. Delving step-by-step into the detail of the Design, Plan, Manage Model, it provides you the opportunity to work with team members to ensure your engagement process is robust.

By the end of this course you will be able to form and express an opinion as to the appropriate ‘best practice’ design plan for an internal or external engagement.

The aim of Engagement Methods is to examine and assess a range of methods so that you will know the appropriate tool for a specific context.

The course challenges you to; assess the appropriate method(s) to achieve your outcomes, consider new methods, and question what you’ve done before.

By the end of this course, you will be able to focus on generating effective communication and constructive dialogue with stakeholders and the community.

Conflict in Engagement

The aim of Conflict in Engagement is to equip those who face situations of conflict in the engagement context to better manage the dynamics.

Exploring the five dimensions of conflict in the engagement context, this course will help you to:

  • Understand a range of strategies for responding to difficult situations and challenging behaviours.
  • Practise ways to prepare for, and respond to, difficult situations.
  • Explore approaches to anticipate, prevent and/or mitigate tense situations.

By the end of this course you will have developed skills to enhance your ability to approach engagement situations that might trigger conflict.

Engagement Evaluation

The aim of Engagement Evaluation is to calibrate your critical thinking. You’ll be challenged to:

  • Ask, “Why evaluate – What’s the theory?”
  • Create an evaluation framework
  • Assess, and make sense of the results
  • Communicate the results to different stakeholders

We are challenging you with current ‘best practice’ – which we all think we know – and working out the reasons why we are often underwhelmed with the results.

By the end of this course you will have enhanced your knowledge with regard to accurate and relevant methods of engagement evaluation.

Engagement Facilitation

The aim of Engagement Facilitation is to develop the skill to facilitate live events in the moment.

We’re not assuming you are a consultant who does this day in, day out: we’ve designed this course for that occasion when you are expecting someone else to be running a session, or everything to be in hand but, guess what! It’s that moment you hoped would never happen!

Using a model called the “3 ‘P’s” of Facilitation, you will explore the drivers of a successful facilitation style and ability. After all, it is about you; your ability to move others to an acceptable outcome. Facilitation skills in the engagement context is an essential career skill and in one day you can enhance your confidence.

By the end of this course you will have enhanced your ability to respond appropriately, generating confidence in, and support for, your facilitation approach.

Engaging with Influence

The aim of Engaging with Influence is to help engagement practitioners enhance their professional presence.

Engaging with influence provides tools and knowledge to assist you to build your professional credibility and impact with other professionals, senior management and community members. It offers key professional development skills for our engagement context.

Validating the worth of engagement to others can assist towards better budgets and more time for engagement planning.

By the end of this course you will have the skills to enhance your professional impact and presence.

IAP2 Australasia Cancellation Policy

 

IAP2 reserves the right to replace your registration reservation with another participant, if your invoice is not paid 10 working days prior to the training or event. The only exception will be for pre-approved terms as detailed below.

You may cancel or change your reservation anytime up to 10 working days before the scheduled date, without incurring a cancellation fee.  After this time a cancellation fee equal to the registration fee applies.

The following policy will apply to cancellations, changes or non-attendance within 10 working days of the scheduled training or event:

  1. If you can find a replacement participant that meets the pre-requisite requirements (if any), then no cancellation fee will apply provided the replacement complies with this policy
  2. If you are unable to provide a replacement participant then no refund will be payable by IAP2.
  3. There is no refund for non-attendance.

IAP2 may consider applications for extenuating circumstances to waive the cancellation fee.

IAP2 reserves the right to request supporting documentation for extenuating circumstances for participant non-attendance or cancellation.

Pre-approved Terms

Organisations can apply for approval to IAP2 for an account to receive payment terms for IAP2 training or event registrations. Each account application will be considered and approved by the IAP2 Finance team. Applicants will need to download and complete the credit application form requesting an IAP2 account which will be processed by Finance normally within 2 working days of receipt and applicants will be notified accordingly by email.

Pay Later exceptions – Organisations who do not have a Purchase Order (PO) number to complete their IAP2 training or event registration will be able to secure a reservation for training or event and have 10 working days to provide their PO to IAP2. After 10 working days if no PO is received then IAP2 reserves the right to rescind their booking reservation.
