Managing Contemporary Outrage

Do you need to learn tools and techniques to deal with these situations? Do you want to turn these negative experiences into positive outcomes?

To enrol in this course, you must have completed Essentials of Engagement training as the pre-requisite course to others in the curriculum.

What’s the difference?

How does Managing Contemporary Outrage differ to Facing Conflict with IAP2 Australasia?

Managing Contemporary Outrage

Facing Conflict

The Managing Contemporary Outrage course looks at conflict from the perspective of more pressured and enabled communities and framing responses from an organisational perspective.

Responding to outrage or potential outrage requires organisations to use all their resources – personal and organisational – to be attuned and empathic to potential conflict or outrage. Managing Contemporary Outrage requires the organisation to recognise internal cultural habits and behaviours that may enhance or limit their capacity to anticipate, mitigate or respond to outrage as an organisation.

The Facing Conflict course looks at your responses as an engagement practitioner to conflict and how to be resourceful in the face of conflict.

Facing Conflict focuses on building the individuals capability to work with conflict in engagement processes. It explores how to recognise different conflict behaviours, and supports the individual to develop the interpersonal and facilitation skills to de-escalate and manage conflict. It is suitable for people who are working one-to-one with people, project teams or groups in the engagement process.

Course aim and objectives

The aim of the Managing Contemporary Outrage course is to assist engagement practitioners to de-escalate conflict, high emotion, and outrage situations and identify and develop strategies for building organisational capability and resilience.

Participants will:

  • Discuss the contemporary drivers of anger and outrage in our organisations and communities.
  • Assess the state of conflict and emotion in the engagement process.
  • Work with the stages of conflict escalation and apply the concepts of de-escalation.
  • Apply strategies to move from conflict into engagement.
  • Identify how to reduce conflict in situations of misinformation and duelling facts.
  • Identify and apply how to model integrity and behaviours that de-escalate conflict.

By the end of this course, you will be able to assess, plan and manage conflict, and high emotion to de-escalate and shift to constructive participation, and identify strategies for building organisational capability and resilience.
