Expressions of Interest for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Working Group

 

The International Association for Public Participation Australasia (IAP2A) invites expressions of interest for the Chair and Working Group Members of the newly established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Advisory Group.  This pivotal group will guide IAP2 Australasia in fostering respectful and effective engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, by embedding culturally informed practices within community engagement.

 

Role of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Advisory Group

  • Inform, co-create, monitor and assess progress, and advise management on ongoing priorities and actions.
  • Provide guidance and advice to IAP2 Australasia in developing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy and Implementation plan.
  • Develop guidelines for engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that will become an important published resource for our members.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

Chair (remunerated opportunity)

  • Lead the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Advisory Group in establishing the group’s annual directives, priorities and deliverables.
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and consultations with the Advisory Group and broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities.
  • Represent the Advisory Group at public events, conferences, and IAP2A gatherings, as required.

This is a paid opportunity due to the nature of the work, experience required and IAP2A’s expected outcomes. Remuneration commensurate with experience will be offered to the successful candidate.

 

Working Group Members (volunteer opportunity)

  • Active participation in regular advisory group meetings, either in person or virtually, as determined by the group.
  • Assist in creating guidelines, tools, and training resources to enhance cultural competency in authentic community engagement practices.
  • Offer insights and advice on projects and initiatives from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewpoint.
  • Engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities and stakeholders to enable their views to be accurately represented and considered.
  • Support the Chair in executing the group’s directives, priorities and deliverables.
  • Confidentiality and discretion regarding any sensitive information discussed during meetings.
  • A minimum commitment of up to eight (8) meetings per annum, with the possibility of extending your involvement depending on mutual agreement.

 

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Ideally, individuals wishing to be considered for the Chair position, identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and have a deep understanding of their respective culture and tradition.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and principles of engagement.
  • Extensive experience in community engagement, particularly in contexts involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • A commitment to the principles of self-determination and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Selection Process

EOIs will be reviewed by a selection panel from IAP2 Australasia. Selection criteria will focus on alignment with the required qualifications, experience in related areas, and a proven dedication to promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in authentic engagement.
